Less Than 1 in 10 Human Trafficking Cases Are Ever Reported

In Pakistan, human trafficking is a silent epidemic. For every case that surfaces, nine remain hidden—buried under fear, mistrust, and institutional neglect. This underreporting perpetuates a cycle of exploitation, allowing traffickers to operate unchecked.

Survivors cite multiple barriers to reporting. Many distrust law enforcement, fearing police complicity or indifference. Others worry about retaliation from powerful trafficking rings. In conservative communities, victims of sexual exploitation face double victimization: first by traffickers, then by societal judgment. Language barriers and illiteracy further alienate marginalized groups, leaving them unaware of legal rights or support systems.

The consequences are dire. Low reporting rates mean traffickers face little risk, emboldening them to expand their operations. It also skews official statistics, leading to underfunded anti-trafficking programs. Survivors, meanwhile, suffer in silence, their trauma unacknowledged and untreated.

Umeed-e-Nau bridges this gap through community-led solutions. They train local volunteers as “trusted reporters” who assist victims in navigating legal processes confidentially. Awareness drives—using radio, social media, and street theater—educate the public on recognizing trafficking signs and safe reporting channels. The organization also lobbies for victim protection laws to shield those who come forward.

Breaking the silence requires a cultural shift. Schools, religious leaders, and media must collaborate to destigmatize reporting. Strengthening whistleblower protections and witness relocation programs could further encourage disclosures. Umeed-e-Nau’s efforts prove that when communities unite, silence transforms into solidarity—and justice becomes possible.
