USEFP Acknowledges Efforts to Combat Human Trafficking through Bahifazat

The United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP) has highlighted the remarkable contributions of Humphrey Fellow and District Police Officer, Wasim Riaz, for his tireless efforts in combating human trafficking in Pakistan.

Human trafficking is one of the most painful realities of our time. Every day, countless men, women, and children become victims of exploitation, forced labor, and deception. Families lose their loved ones to smugglers, children are pulled out of schools to work in harsh conditions, and many vulnerable groups are silenced under threats and fear.

In the heart of Punjab, a bold initiative has begun to change this story. The Anti-Human Trafficking Cell (AHTC), established in December 2024 by Wasim Riaz, District Police Officer of Mandi Bahauddin, has set a strong foundation to protect victims and dismantle the networks of traffickers.

Rescuing Children and Restoring Futures

One of the greatest achievements of this initiative has been the rescue of over 70 children from underage and forced labor. These children, who were once denied their childhood and education, have been placed back in schools, ensuring that they grow up with dignity, knowledge, and opportunities. By addressing both the victims and the root causes, the AHTC is not only saving lives today but also securing a better tomorrow.

Bahifazat – A Platform for Awareness and Safety

To strengthen this mission, Bahifazat was launched – a unique platform that combines technology and community engagement. Through Bahifazat, people are not only learning about the dangers of human trafficking but also finding a safe space to report exploitation without fear. It acts as a bridge between vulnerable communities and law enforcement, ensuring that no victim’s voice goes unheard.

The platform also spreads awareness through campaigns, educational sessions, and training programs, encouraging young people to resist false promises and empowering communities to stand united against traffickers.

International Recognition

These efforts have recently been recognized by the United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP), which highlighted Wasim Riaz’s work as an inspiring example of local leadership creating global impact.

Reflecting on this recognition, Wasim Riaz shared:
“During my time as a Humphrey Fellow at American University, I explored advanced models for combating human trafficking. Learning from U.S. federal and local agencies gave me new insights into how law enforcement, civil society, and communities can work together. I brought this learning back home to build stronger systems in Pakistan.”

A Call for Collective Action

The recognition of Bahifazat is not just a personal achievement, but a collective milestone for everyone committed to fighting exploitation. It shows that change is possible when institutions, communities, and technology join hands.

Human trafficking is not only a crime—it is a violation of humanity. With initiatives like the AHTC and Bahifazat, the fight against this injustice has gained new strength in Pakistan. Each rescued child, each safe family, and each informed citizen brings us closer to a society where freedom and dignity are protected for all.
